Nick Sikkuark (1943 – 2013)

An important Canadian Inuit* sculptor, draftsman and author (see sources), Nick Sikkuark (disc number* W1-209) was born near Garry Lake, Nunavut and died in Kugaaruk (formerly Pelly Bay), Nunavut (about 330 miles to the northeast of Garry Lake), where he had lived since 1968. He was listed in the “Canadian Who’s Who” books and is mentioned in “The Canadian Encyclopedia”. Dozens of his works are in major Canadian museum collections such as the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Canadian Museum of History, and the National Gallery of Canada.

His sculpture mediums included stone and ivory; but, most famously they are assemblages of found objects such as whalebone*, walrus skulls, antlers, horns, animal hair, fur, feathers, hide, baleen and sinew. His drawing mediums included charcoal, graphite, pastels, colored pencil and mixed mediums.
